During the summer of 2007, Hamayon Rastgar and Michael Skinner toured throughout Afghanistan where they listened to working class Afghans, students, academics, journalists, and opposition political leaders, who have no voice in the North American media. After hearing the stories told by these Afghans, Rastgar and Skinner conclude the war in Afghanistan is not an altruistic war about liberating Afghans and certainly not about liberating Afghan women. Instead, the Canadian state is motivated by economics and geopolitics – this is a war about liberating capital. A few North American businesses may profit immensely from this war as Canada manoeuvres itself into a favourable position in America’s New World Order.
