On September 23, Jeremy Hinzman, the first US Iraq War resister to come to Canada, is scheduled to be deported. He and his family will face serious hardship if returned to the US.
A clear majority of Canadians - 82 per cent - oppose the Iraq War, and 64 per cent believe that US Iraq War resisters should be allowed to stay in Canada.
On June 3, a majority of Members of Parliament in the House of Commons voted by 137 to 110 to let the resisters to stay and to stop all deportation proceedings against them. Yet the Harper government has refused to respect the majority of Canadians and the will of Parliament.
On September 13, the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War formed part of the national demonstration to allow U.S. War Resisters to stay in Canada!
